It’s rainy today, and the snow is vanishing. It’s a gentle, almost warm rain. As if it were April, not February.

And as you can see, February showers have moistened the soil in the milk jugs. (Water is added when the milk jug is made; the water should freeze and then thaw, cracking the hulls of the seeds as nature does).

So I have the picture in my mind now that with a thaw like this, winter sowing is the same as planting too early, and all my seeds are going to rot, like they did my first year when I planted two weeks before Memorial Day. Looks like it’s getting colder over the weekend, but still: mid-30s for the 10-day forecast.

I’m glad I’m not a real peasant, because if my life depended on this stuff, I’d be in trouble!
